bookmark_borderCan a Trip to Disney World be Zero Waste?!

Hey earth muffins! Wow – it feels great writing an actual post for you all! If you read my latest updates, you will know that my boyfriend and I recently took a trip to Disney World over spring break, before all the craziness of Mister Corona started. We definitely lucked out with timing, as most (if not all) of the Disney parks are now closed due to the pandemic (please stay safe out there everyone!). After my boyfriend and I had picked our destination, I was excited to see if visiting Disney parks is possible when you are zero waste or, like me, trying to be as low waste as possible. We were in Orlando, FL for only a total of 4 days and hit up two different parks: Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

So the big question is, can a trip to Disney be sustainable? For the short answer: yes, it is totally possible to zero waste Disney parks. BUT, it does require some effort. From our experience, I wanted to share some of my suggestions for making a trip to Disney World as low waste as possible.

Take advantage of the fact that you can bring bags into the park. My parents gifted me an adorable mini backpack purse for Christmas, so I was able to bring food and my 8 oz stainless steel water bottle into the park with me. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to bring in metal, but Disney is apparently only strict about no glass in the parks. That being said, you can bring in as many reusable containers as you want, which is awesome if you are wanting to reduce single use items when it comes to food and water as well as save a lot of money with how expensive Disney food is. There are plenty of water fountains around the parks too, so don’t worry about running out of water!

Reuse your Magic Band if you have been to Disney before (or are an Annual Passholder). Even if your band was linked to a different account you are able to re-link it to a new account, which saves you from having a plastic card/ticket to enter the parks and use for FastPass. If this is your first time to the park, no worries! Save your Magic Band for either your next trip or give to family/friends who will be going (who can then re-link the band to their own account). A perfect zero waste Disney tip!

Use the My Disney Experience app instead of paper maps, menus, etc. The Disney app has everything you could possibly need during your visit including wait times, maps, dinner reservations, booking FastPasses, etc. Make sure that someone in your group has a phone that has a battery that will last all day or bring a travel charger if you have one.

Take advantage of the dinner reservation feature of the app and take a break by eating in instead of eating out! Many of the Instagram worthy mouse shaped treats come with a lot of waste in tow… Even though Disney did make the switch to paper straws, single use items are still mainly used. If you have the financial resources, try a sit-down restaurant instead! My boyfriend and I had been gifted a bunch of Disney gift cards before our trip, so we definitely took advantage of eating in and found some really tasty food along the way!

Eat vegetarian/vegan options! On the topic of food, I suggest reducing your impact on the planet by utilizing the many vegetarian and vegan options at Disney. I have been a pescatarian since August and was excited to learn about all of the great options they have in their parks. Many of the take-out options are pretty customizable when it comes to removing meat from say a Greek salad (the price will also be less).

Reduce your food waste by ordering off the kid’s menu. I’ll be the first to admit that my stomach is the size of a large snail. Okay, it’s probably bigger than that, but I get full SO easily. To prevent throwing away half of a meal, I would definitely recommend either splitting or ordering from the kid’s menu. No one at Disney cares if you aren’t 12 and under (I promise!), and the meals are actually quite large, healthy, and cheaper than the adult versions of the same thing.

Use alternative transportation to get to the parks! Reduce the emissions from yet another car going to Disney and use the many other forms of transportation available in Orlando. Many of the resorts and outside hotels have shuttle services or take an UberPool instead.

Buy your Mickey merch at the thrift store (or borrow from family/friends) BEFORE you get to the park. While thrifting for Disney apparel is definitely a trial and error process because of the brand’s popularity, it can be done for a zero waste Disney trip. After keeping my eye out for a couple of months, I found an adorable Mickey shirt for only $0.25 at one of the local thrift stores in Ann Arbor! I actually saw a woman wearing the same exact shirt at Magic Kingdom, but my impact on the planet was much much smaller. If you aren’t having any luck, try borrowing clothes (and even Mickey ears) from family or friends. This will also save you hella coin at the parks!

Be smart with your souvenir choices and avoid all plastic ones! I won’t sit here and tell you to not buy a souvenir at all because then I would be a hypocrite. But, you can still buy things at the parks that aren’t terrible for the environment. We bought a couple of paper postcards to use as wall décor (which can then be recycled if we ever get bored of them) and then a glass ornament for our Christmas tree. While avoiding plastic souvenirs gets much harder when you have kids, try to steer your eager shopper towards something that will last a long time like a metal pin, glass figurine, etc.

Overall, I think you can definitely make your trip at Disney a sustainable one! Like any situation, you just need to be cognizant of the impact your decisions will have. But, don’t feel like your whole trip has to be fully sustainable! I personally feel like doing my best to live zero/low waste 90% of the time is totally fine because I am still doing a ton to help out the planet. If you want to splurge on a plastic Elsa doll or a Mickey ice cream sandwich in plastic wrap 10% of the time, I say go for it! We all deserve a little extra at the happiest place in the world.

Love,
Jenna ♥

bookmark_borderThe Weekender’s Guide to Cleveland, Ohio: What To Do & Eat on the East Side! 🥰

Hey earth muffins! A couple of weekends ago, I went to Cleveland to visit one of my college friends. She lives in a suburb on the East Side of the city and was kind enough to show me around for a few days. It was so much fun to explore with her, so I thought I would share another weekender’s guide with you all (especially since you have loved my guides for Madison (WI), Fort Wayne (IN), Bar Harbor (ME), and Washington D.C.). 😊

What To Do:
1. Visit the Cleveland Museum of Art – My friend is a huge art buff, so it was great to explore this museum with her as she knew so many fun facts about certain paintings and artists! For a free museum, it has SO much art it in from ancient Egyptian sculptures to modern art. Plus, they have some extremely famous art from Monet, Degas, Picasso, Rembrant, etc. 🎨 We were lucky enough to witness a couple get engaged in front of a Monet painting, which was definitely the cherry on top of this museum trip!

2. Walk around Little Italy – Your girl right here is Italian, so of course I had to check out Little Italy! It was so cute and fun to walk around; see my Italian dessert suggestions in the section below. 😉

3. Drive through the gorgeous neighborhoods of Shaker Heights – This might be odd, but I absolutely love to drive through residential neighborhoods when I am visiting new places! There are some gorgeous (and huge) houses in Shaker Heights, so I would definitely recommend driving around if you are into that sort of thing.

A picture of a house in Shaker Heights, Cleveland

4. Walk around University Circle – At the heart of the East Side of Cleveland is University Circle which has many museums (the art museum is here!) and colleges (including Case Western). It is a great place to cover some ground on foot.

5. Spend time in the Botanical garden – I was in town when the weather was just starting to turn cold, so I wasn’t able to embrace any nature inside the garden… However, I would definitely recommend checking it out if you are searching for some calm in the city. 🦋

6. Find some famous graves in the Lake View Cemetery – President Garfield, John Rockefeller, and many other people are buried here. There is free parking on the side of the street next to the cemetery on East 123rd Street, which is a great place to park if you are going to walk around Little Italy or University Circle!

What To Eat:
1. Cannoli from Presti’s Italian Bakery – Cannoli have forever been my favorite dessert, and these were a 10/10. This place gets extremely busy, so make sure you take a number when you enter so that you save your spot in line. 😄 They have huge portions for a reasonable price, making it a must stop!

2. Peppermint Thai Cuisine – This restaurant is located over in the Pepper Pike suburb, so if you find yourself nearby I would definitely recommend. The food is healthy, delicious, and a great price! The teriyaki salmon was amazing, and my friend (and her family) order food from this restaurant all the time (which shows you just how good it is!).

3. Mitchell’s Ice Cream – Good ice cream is a staple whenever I travel, so I love that this brand is local to Ohio. They have traditional flavors but also some out of the box ones, making it perfect for everyone in the family! 🍨

What are your favorite things to do on the East Side of Cleveland?

bookmark_borderHow to Zero Waste Your Airplane Flight ✈️

Hey earth muffins! After branching out from my “How to Zero Waste Your [insert room here]” series into topics like periods, I thought it would be fun to explore traveling. As I recently took a trip to Washington D.C., it seemed like the perfect time to share my tips for being low waste on an airplane. 😊

Note: flying on a airplane is not good for the environment. It is actually one of the worst things to do… So, there really isn’t a “zero waste” way to fly; however, if you must fly these are tips that you can use to mitigate other waste at the airport and on board.

1. Book an airline that uses online boarding passes – You won’t have to worry about printing your ticket or losing it along the way! Just make sure your phone is charged up to be scanned through security and the gate. Delta has a great app I use, but I am sure many other airlines offer this lovely feature.

2. Bring your own water bottle – People I talk to are often unaware that you can bring your own water bottle through security (just make sure it is empty when you go through!). Airports have water fountains near the bathrooms, which reduces the need to buy plastic water bottles in the airport or to get a beverage during the in-flight food service.

3. Be prepared with some snacks! – Again, you can bring snacks through security! For my trip to Washington D.C., I brought along some pretzel sticks in a reusable sandwich bag. 🥨 I was able to refuse the snack mid-flight and even have some leftovers for my layover. While I didn’t have enough space in my bag to bring as much food as I could have, at least a few snack packages were saved!

4. Bring your own ear buds/headphones (noise cancelling is recommended!) – You can usually purchase cheap, throwaway-able ear buds on flights, but save your money (and the planet) by bringing your own!

5. Don’t check a bag; bring a carry-on! – Even if you have your own luggage tag, your checked bag will still get adorned with some extra stickers and tags that are unnecessary. Save that waste by packing light and bringing only a carry-on. 🧳

bookmark_borderThe Weekender’s Guide to Washington, D.C.

Hey earth muffins! As you could tell from @lifeofanearthmuffin, you will know that I recently spent a few days in Washington, D.C.! While I wasn’t there to be a tourist (I was attending an accounting conference for my graduate program), I did have some extra time in the evenings to do a bit of exploring… So I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to write another Weekender’s Guide post 😊 Let’s jump right into it!

What To Do:
1. Walk around to visit all of the monuments – I’m talking Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, etc. There are SO many cool monuments to visit! There is quite a bit of walking involved to get to all of them, so you might consider taking the Metro. If you are going to ride the subway, you will need to purchase a Smartrip card for $2 and then add money onto the card depending on the price of the fare to each stop. The Metro machines can be quite complicated but there are always nice workers ready to help! 👍

2. Hit up museums – Many of the museums are FREE, so I would definitely recommend checking out as many as possible. You can see some amazing things all the way from Dorothy’s ruby red slippers to space ships. There’s a lot of history to learn!

3. Take a double decker tour bus – If you don’t have a lot of time, consider taking a bus tour. The one I went on was during sunset, and we hit a ton of monuments in only three hours. Such a great way to see the city!

4. Take a picture in front of the White House – It is surprisingly smaller than you think it would be…. 📸

5. Hit up The Player’s Club (1400 14th St NW) – If you are looking for a cool night life scene, I suggest this club. There is a sky deck, pool tables, games (pin ball, etc.), and even a whole shelf of board games. As someone who doesn’t drink, there were plenty of other fun things to do.

What To Eat:
1. Buredo – This place has sushi burritos!! Literally two of my favorite foods morphed into one – how could I not eat there? 🍣

2. Georgetown Cupcakes – I used to bake cupcakes all the time, so it was a blast from the past to go into a cupcakery. While I now think cupcakes are overly sweet (I’d definitely prefer a cookie), this was one of the more tasty cupcakes I have tried!

3. Picnic on the Washington Mall – The Washington Mall is absolutely gorgeous if the weather is nice, so I recommend buying your favorite dishes/snacks at the grocery store for a fun little picnic! Plus, this can be much cheaper than eating out. 🙂

Where to Stay:
1. Homewood Suites by Hilton (1475 Massachusetts Ave NW) – I stayed here and it was really nice… And it wasn’t as expensive as some of the other hotels around. It was a 15 minute walk from the White House, so you definitely can’t beat the location!

bookmark_borderThe Weekender’s Guide to Bar Harbor, ME 🦞

Hey earth muffins! As I mentioned in my rebranding post last month, I grew up on the East Coast. My family spent a lot of time vacationing along the ocean, and one of our favorite destinations was Maine. This state is absolutely gorgeous, and I always tell people that they need to visit at least once in their life. 😊 You all seemed to enjoy my Weekender Guides to Madison, WI and Fort Wayne, IN, so I decided to branch out and share my personal travel guide to Bar Harbor, Maine! 🦞 This town is the epitome of what Maine has to offer, so it is definitely worth its tourist reputation.

What To Do
1. Park Loop Road @ Acadia National Park: Acadia is typically what people think of when they are planning a trip to Maine, and this 27 mile loop hits all of the highlights. There are a bunch of different pullovers with amazing views, and you will definitely see some wildlife!

2. Shopping downtown: I have so many great memories shopping in the cute stores of the downtown. Some of my favorites include the Christmas Spirit Shop, Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop, and Cool as a Moose.

3. Picnic at Agamont Park: This park is right next to the downtown and overlooks the ocean, so after some fun shopping take a break and enjoy the sights! 😊

Throwback to me at this park as a child

4. Bike or take a horse around the Carriage Roads: The bike paths are all paved, so it is doable for anyone! I personally loved taking a horse drawn carriage around the trails, but if you want to get in the exercise a bike will do the trick.

5. Visit Thunder Hole: This is a classic Maine tourist stop if you want to see the ocean at its finest. Be careful to not get too close to the railing, as the water has been known to pull people in!

6. Hike around Jordan Pond: There are so many trails in Acadia, but this is one of the easier ones. You basically just hike around a pond, so it is perfect for people of all ages.

What To Eat
1. Popovers at Jordan Pond House!: After hiking around the pond, take a break to eat some of Maine’s finest popovers. These pancake/muffin/Dutch baby crossovers are absolutely delicious… Such a nostalgic treat for me now!

2. LOBSTER: Duh. You can get fresh lobster all over the place in Bar Harbor, but the most authentic restaurants with the freshest lobster will have huge steam pots out front.

3. CJ’s Big Dipper Ice Cream: While it might be a small store, their ice cream is amazing. I remember as a kid getting a chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream that was about 80% cookie dough… And I still crave it to this day! 😃

Where to Stay
There are so many great places that you can stay at! First, the coast is lined with a bunch of different hotels and resorts at varying price points. If you are willing to drive in from further away, I am sure you will be able to find even better deals. Acadia and the surrounding area is packed full of campgrounds too if you want to embrace nature to its fullest. Lastly, it looks like Airbnb has a ton of cute cottages that can be rented out, which would be super nice if you are traveling with your family.

Have you ever been to Bar Harbor, Maine?

Love,
Jenna ♥

bookmark_borderThe Weekender’s Guide to Fort Wayne, Indiana!

Hey earth muffins! My boyfriend and I spent the weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana a few weeks ago, as I am sure you saw on Instagram. I recently made a Weekender’s Guide to Madison, WI, so I thought it would be fun to do the same for this city. Fingers crossed that I will be able to continue to travel this summer… but let’s jump right into it!

Pin to read later!

What To Do
1. Walk around the city – One of my absolute favorite things to do in a new city is to walk around aimlessly to see the sites. As there are plenty of public parking structures in the city, it is definitely a must to ditch the car and wander! Fort Wayne is a pretty small city overall, so it was easily walkable. Fun things to look at: Embassy Theater, Tincaps Stadium, Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Allen County Public Library and Genealogy Center.

2. Hit up any/some/all of the museums – Fort Wayne has a bunch of museums all around the city including the Museum of Art, the Firefighters Museum, and an Air Museum! I was actually impressed by how reasonably priced everything was… Make sure to take advantage of student discounts! 🙂

3. Take pictures with some murals – There are murals all over the place, and it was super fun to take some cute pictures while sightseeing. If you are looking for some cute Insta pics, check out this interactive map that points out all of the murals!

Peep the new profile pic to see another cute mural!

4. Go to the Botanical Conservatory – I am a huge plant lover, so I would suggest checking out all of the cool florals in this conservatory! Plus, it is right across the street from the Cathedral I mentioned above. 👍

5. Do some shopping – The Glenbrook Square mall is about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown, and it had a lot of great stores! I was also really excited that there is a two story carousel in the food court…

There was a dino, so I obviously loved it…

6. Attend the Fort Wayne Air Show – While this only happens once a year, it was definitely worth it! Parking and admissions is FREE, and it was so cool to see Air Force planes (both on the ground and in the air). What a cool event!

Got to go inside this one! 😮

What to Eat
1. Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island (131 W Main St) – This coney island has been open since 1914, and it still sells hot dogs for super cheap. My boyfriend loves coney dogs, so we just had to go – for $1.50 per dog it was definitely a win!

2. Yummi Bunni (123 W Main St) – This ice cream shop is right next door to the coney island, and it is soooo cute inside. 🍦 Plus, their classic “bun” is ice cream STUFFED INSIDE A GLAZED DONUT. Yes. Please.

I ordered the Bun of the Week: Moosetracks in a Glazed Donut with chunks of waffle cone… YUM!

Where to Stay
1. Paul’s Apartment on Airbnb – My boyfriend and I chose to stay in an Airbnb, as we wanted to have access to a kitchen and laundry if needed. This apartment was 5 minutes from downtown, and it was such a great Airbnb! It was also quite cheap (only $108 for two nights!), so I would definitely recommend checking it out. 😊

2. Hotels – There are a bunch of hotels downtown, but they would definitely be more expensive than the place we stayed at. But, it is still an option!

Have you ever been to Fort Wayne? What did you do when you were there?

Love,
Jenna ♥

bookmark_borderThe Weekender’s Guide to Madison, Wisconsin 🧀

Hey earth muffins! Wow, this feels so weird – I haven’t posted on a Monday in quite some time… But I am super excited to share this travel guide with you all today! 😁 I recently spent some time in Madison, WI and would recommend visiting this city to everyone! There was so much to do; I definitely did not get to see as much of it as I wanted… But here are the things that I would recommend!

What To Do
1. Walk around the University of Wisconsin campus: As a Michigan grad I shouldn’t be supporting a rival school, but their campus was absolutely gorgeous! There were so many unique buildings to look at including Bascom Hall (which sits on top of a super pretty hill!).

2. Listen to music at the Terrace of the Memorial Union: The city of Madison is located between two different lakes, making this terrace the perfect place to eat, listen to local musicians, swim, watch the sunset, and have a great time!
3. Climb to the observation decks of the Capitol Building: The Capitol is free and open to the public, and you are able to climb all the way up to the interior AND exterior observation decks. These are some great views of the city!

The view from the interior viewing platform
A view of the city (and solar panels!!) from the exterior deck

4. Hit up the farmer’s market: While it is extremely crowded, there are a ton of awesome stalls selling everything from succulents to jewelry! Hot tip: Make sure you walk counterclockwise around the Capitol 👍
5. Go to a cheese barn: While not in the city, it is basically mandatory that you find some Wisconsin cheese curds! I went to two cheese stores that were about 20-25 minutes from downtown: Mousehouse Cheesehaus and Ehlenbach’s Cheese Chalet.

What to Eat
1. The Nitty Gritty: This bar is the place to go – especially if it is your birthday! They give you a free balloon and beer mug with unlimited drinks (alcholic or non-alcholic)… Plus, they sing to you! 🎉 The burgers are super tasty, and it is located right downtown.
2. Essen Haus Restaurant: AMAZING German food! If you want a fun time with friends, you can split a 2 liter beer boot while listening to live music…

The Strawberry Salad with a side of spinach spätzle

3. Barriques: I stayed outside of the city in a hotel in Middleton, so I ate lunch at this adorable cafe.☕ The food was super delicious and affordable – definitely a good brunch stop!

My delicious cranberry almond scone!

Where to Stay
1. Airbnbs: There are so many cute apartments on Airbnb to choose from! This allows you to stay close to downtown/campus, which ensures that you don’t miss any of the sites 😀
2. Downtown Madison hotels: While there aren’t many choices (I think there are around 4 hotels downtown), the rates for the hotels are pretty comparable to any Airbnb.
3. Middleton hotels: As I mentioned before, I stayed in Middleton instead of downtown. The Staybridge Suites was a nice hotel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the free breakfast. Middleton is an adorable little town that even has a free trolley that takes you around the city!
