Tips for Selling on Facebook Marketplace: A Beginner’s Guide

Facebook Marketplace has become one of the easiest and most accessible platforms for selling secondhand items. Especially if you’ve done some spring (or summer) decluttering, it’s definitely the best way to get a little extra cash for items that would otherwise end up getting donated. Because it has a huge audience and no listing fees, it’s a no brainer for selling your stuff. If you’re ready to make some extra cash (and keep items out of the landfill!), here are some practical tips for selling successfully on Facebook Marketplace.

1. Take clear, high quality photos

Photos are everything when it comes to your listing. Items with well-lit, high quality images get significantly more attention than those with dark or blurry pictures. Use natural lighting as much as possible so that the colors of the object aren’t distorted or incorrect. Take images from all sides and angles (including close-ups of any areas that have flaws or damage!) so that the buyer knows exactly what they are getting.

2. Write an honest and detailed description

The best hack – think like you’re the buyer trying to score a deal on Facebook Marketplace! A clear, thorough description lets the buyer know exactly what the item is. In addition, a detailed description will minimize unnecessary messages from potential buyers as all the information is already there! I recommend including:

  • Brand name and model (if one)
  • Dimensions or size
  • Condition (be honest about any wear and tear or damages)
  • Reason for selling (optional, but often helpful if a buyer may think it’s too good to be true)

3. Price it correctly

Pricing can definitely make or break a sale. Be realistic about what a secondhand item like yours is actually worth. If you aren’t sure what the going rate is, see what similar items are being listed for on Facebook Marketplace. It’s best to price items slightly higher than you expect them to sell for, as most buyers will negotiate a lower price.

4. Use strategic keywords

You also need to consider keywords in the title and description. What would someone type to find your item?? Include alternative names (ex. sofa/couch), common terms and spellings, and key descriptors like “mid-century”, “vintage”, etc. Don’t overload your post with a million keywords though! Keep only the relevant ones so that you get the right traffic to your listing.

5. Respond to inquiries quickly

Facebook Marketplace moves fast. Sellers who reply quickly to inquiries will help you secure sales with interested parties. Be prepared for ghosting and flaky buyers too – unfortunately that is just the nature of the marketplace sometimes.

6. Use safe pickup locations (or porch pickup)

Once you’ve sold an item, be safe about how the buyer will get it. For smaller, low-priced items, porch pickup is usually the easiest way to go. For larger transactions, meet in a public place or bring a spouse or friend with you to ensure the transaction goes smoothly.

7. Update or renew older listings

If your item hasn’t sold in a week or two, there are a couple things to consider. First, lower the price slightly. This may convince buyers to bite! Second, update the description or photos if people have been interested but continue to have the same questions. Lastly, Facebook Marketplace has the “Renew Listing” feature that gets it bumped back up to the top of the search results.
