Most people hear “home security” and instantly think of blinding floodlights, alarms louder than a rock concert, and enough cameras to make the neighbors wonder if they’re on reality TV. Well, yes, that all is technically true, and some people do that. Honestly, it’s understandable to even want something like that before you go out on vacation too. But even with that all said, home security doesn’t necessarily need to be like this.
Sure, that stuff works, but it’s also wasteful, ugly, and kind of exhausting. But really, security doesn’t have to look like a prison yard. You can keep your home safe and still be kind to the planet, all without making your front lawn look like a Hollywood film set. There’s some balance to it, but it’s really about mastering it.
Smarter Lighting, Not Brighter Lighting
Alright, so you know those houses that keep their floodlights on all night long? Yeah, no one’s sneaking in, but no one’s sleeping either. Well, you should really keep in mind that constant lighting wastes power, messes with your body clock, and honestly makes the place look like an airport runway. That’s not a pretty sight, right? Well, motion-sensor lights are the real hero here. They pop on when they’re needed, not all night. Honestly, go solar-powered and it’s even better (cheaper in the long run, too).
Your Plants Can Pull Double Duty
Needless to say, pretty landscaping is nice, but landscaping that can also tell intruders “don’t even think about it” is even better. But how so? Well, for example, you can plant thorny roses under a window, tall hedges along the property line (granted, they take a long time to grow), or a row of bamboo.
These are just some examples, of course, so it depends on your aesthetic. But besides that, the birds and bees love it, so you’re basically boosting security and helping pollinators at the same time. Besides, who would want to be around a bunch of bees anyway, right?
Sturdy Gates
Now, you really have to keep in mind that a flimsy little garden fence isn’t keeping anyone out. But what about driveway gates, though? You can absolutely count on them to “mean business”. But it also helps with how luxurious-looking they are. So, the idea might not inherently sound sustainable, but they technically can be. It usually just depends on the material that you’re getting (and they do come in different materials). But of course, you can even dress it up with climbing vines, because nothing says “keep out” quite like a gate that looks like it belongs in a castle. Right?
Smart Home Tech
Maybe you already knew this, but old-school security systems are energy hogs, and their effectiveness is questionable, too. But these days, smart cameras and alarms are leaner, meaner, and way more efficient. A lot of them even run on solar, especially the Ring series that sells on Amazon (granted, Amazon is far from being eco-friendly), but more and more companies are popping up, too.
Security isn’t only about keeping people out; it’s about making your home tough enough to stand the test of time. Well, that should have already been a given, right? Well, eco-friendly materials like recycled steel doors or sustainably sourced wood give you durability without all the waste. Actually, the same can be said for reinforced windows since most are now made from greener materials.
