Tips for Having the BEST Eco Snow Day

The best feeling in the world – when school is cancelled due to snow! Snow days are oftentimes a blessing; they are the perfect time to relax and enjoy some eco-friendly activities with your family. Whether you like to head outdoors and enjoy the snowy conditions or curl up by the fireplace with a good book, there are plenty of ways to have an eco snow day. In this blog post, we’ll explore creative ways to make the most of your snow day while minimizing your environmental impact.

1. Explore nature in all its winter glory!

Take advantage of the snow-covered landscape by going for a winter hike or nature walk. Bundle up in sustainable (possibly secondhand) winter gear and explore nearby trails or parks to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of a snowy day. If you are someone who enjoys winter activities (skiing, snowshoeing, etc.), this is the perfect time to get outside!

2. Build snowy creations

Get creative with eco-friendly snow sculptures and forts using natural materials like branches, pinecones, and leaves. A snow day isn’t complete without building a snowman! Avoid using plastic items and opt for natural decorations to embellish your snowy masterpieces.

3. Have a zero waste (snow) picnic

Pack a zero-waste picnic with homemade snacks and warm beverages in reusable containers. Bring along eco-friendly utensils, plates, and napkins to minimize waste and enjoy a cozy outdoor feast with your family.

4. Practice energy efficiency

If you’re spending time indoors on your snow day, practice energy efficiency by lowering heat usage and unplugging electronic devices when not in use. It doesn’t hurt to bundle up with a cozy sweater or two so that you don’t have to turn up the heat as high! Use natural light whenever possible and reduce energy consumption to minimize your carbon footprint.

5. Do a neighborhood clean up

If it’s not incredibly snowy, a snow day can be the perfect time to bundle up and clean up your neighborhood. Equip yourselves with reusable bags and gloves and collect litter to keep outdoor spaces clean and pristine for wildlife and future visitors.

6. Pause and reflect on your eco journey

Take time to reflect and appreciate the beauty of nature during your snow day. Pause to listen to the sounds of winter, breathe in the crisp air, and marvel at the intricate snowflakes as they blanket the landscape in snow. Mother Earth sure looks pretty in white!
