How to Throw a Sustainable Super Bowl Party

As January comes to an end, football fans are amping up for the biggest game of the year – the Super Bowl! Even if you aren’t big on the game itself, the Super Bowl is a time to make some fun foods, get together with friends, and enjoy some sports (and ads!). For those hosting a watch party, it’s an excellent opportunity to combine the excitement of the game with sustainable practices. This blog post provides a playbook for hosting a sustainable Super Bowl party that scores big on fun and low on environmental impact.

Before the Big Game:

  • Don’t waste your time with paper invites – Like with any low waste party, skip the wasteful paper invites and opt for digital invitations. They can be texts, Facebooks groups, or even more formal digital invitations from places like Evite or Paperless Post.
  • Deck out your space with eco-friendly decorations! Opt for reusable banners, tablecloths, and team-themed decor that can be used for future events. If you can, source these items from secondhand stores in your area too. Consider upcycling materials for DIY decor projects as well.
  • Figure out how guests will get to the party – If your guests are local, encourage carpooling or the use of public transportation to reduce the environmental impact of everyone driving their own vehicle.

Tips for Having the Sustainable Super Bowl Party:

  • Be eco about tableware – Avoid disposable options and use real dishes and silverware. If you don’t have enough for everyone, ask guests to bring their own!
  • Craft a plant-powered menu. Incorporate vegetarian and vegan options, reducing the environmental impact associated with meat production. Fresh veggies, plant-based dips, and snacks can be just as delicious and crowd-pleasing. I personally am a huge fan of cowboy caviar and french onion dip!
  • Source snacks and ingredients locally to support nearby businesses and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Opt for organic options when you can to minimize exposure to pesticides and promote sustainable farming practices.
  • Host your Super Bowl party in an energy-efficient manner. Turn off unnecessary lights and electronics when not in use.
  • Set up clearly labeled recycling and composting stations. Make it easy for guests to dispose of their waste responsibly. Consider providing incentives, like a fun game or contest, to encourage participation.

After the Party:

  • Make sure to have a plan for leftover food! You can incorporate the leftovers into your meal plan for the week or allow guest to take some food home. Use the freezer if you must too! For all other food waste, make sure to compost it.
  • Take out the recycling. Since you had a recycling station, you should end up with a bag full of glass bottles or cans… Make sure this ends up in your curbside recycling bin! Or, take it to a bottle deposit station for a little bit of cash.

  1. These are excellent suggestions! I’m not a football person, but I will pass some of these tips along to my family members, because they will be having a small get-together, I’m sure!
