Crazy to think that another year is almost over! For me, this year really flew by… But I am looking forward to what the next year brings. Celebrating New Year’s Eve can look different for everyone – partying, chilling at home, watching a countdown, or hosting an event for family and friends. Amid the fireworks and good memories, sustainability can often take a back seat. Embracing a sustainable approach to New Year’s Eve isn’t just a great way to start the year right. It’s also a wonderful way to ensure that our celebrations do not leave a negative mark on the planet. Here are some easy ways to celebrate an eco New Year’s Eve!
1. Rethink your party habits
If you’re hosting or attending a New Year’s Eve party, opt for reusable or biodegradable party supplies. Use real dishes, glassware, and cloth napkins instead of disposable items. If you need to use disposable items, choose those made from sustainable materials like bamboo or compostable plastics. Additionally, encourage guests to bring their own containers for leftovers to reduce food waste. There are plenty of ways to host an eco party!
2. Choose sustainable decorations
Decorate with items that can be reused year after year. Bonus points for buying these decorations at the thrift store! There is NO need to buy plastic favors with one year on them, as they just end up in the landfill. You could even try your hand at DIY decor as well.
3. Eco-friendly firework alternatives
Traditional fireworks are a major source of pollution and waste. Don’t go to a firework store and shoot off your own fireworks. Instead, hit up a firework show in your area or watch one live online (if you must indulge in fireworks at all). Or, consider laser light shows, which can be just as spectacular without the environmental impact. For a milder celebration, shoot off some eco-friendly confetti made from natural or biodegradable materials when the clock strikes midnight.
4. Pick local celebrations (or stay in!)
Choose to celebrate at local venues or community events to reduce carbon emissions related to travel. Walking, biking, or using public transport to get to your celebration spot can also significantly lower your carbon footprint. Or, enjoy activities that have a minimal environmental impact at home, such as board games, card games, or watching a classic movie. These types of entertainment provide enjoyment without extra energy consumption or waste.
5. Pick eco resolutions
New Year’s is a popular time to make resolutions. Make sustainability a focus of your resolutions this year! Commit to making lasting changes like reducing plastic use, minimizing travel, or eating more plant-based meals. Share your commitments with friends and family to encourage a collective effort toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
6. Be mindful about your consumption
Be mindful of the amount (and type) of food and drinks you consume during your celebrations. Opt for local, seasonal, and organic food when possible. And try the meatless options as well! For drinks, pick local items that are in recyclable glass bottles or aluminum cans. Plan out your consumption carefully so that there is no food waste at the end of the night.
Celebrating an eco New Year’s Eve helps set a positive tone for the coming year. By choosing environmentally friendly practices, we not only enjoy our festivities but also protect our planet for future celebrations. And you can still make tons of great memories too! What are your resolutions this year??
