How to Be Sustainable at the Water Park

Water parks are a popular destination for fun and relaxation, especially during these hot, summer months. However, like many recreational activities, a day at the water park can have a significant environmental impact if you aren’t careful. From the use of vast amounts of water to disposable food containers, it is crucial to think about how to reduce your impact ahead of time. Here’s how you can make your next water park visit more eco-friendly!

~Choose water parks that actually care about sustainability

Look for parks that utilize water-saving technologies, such as water recycling systems, solar heating, or eco-friendly water treatment methods. Some parks also participate in environmental certification programs or have received awards for their sustainability efforts. A good place to start is by looking at their website – if they have no mention of the planet or their sustainability practices, it might be a good idea to skip out on supporting that park.

~Carpool or take public transportation there

Reduce your carbon footprint by opting for public transportation, carpooling, or other sustainable travel options to get to the water park. This not only cuts down on emissions but also reduces traffic congestion and parking space shortages at popular venues. Plus, it is a lot more fun to travel with your friends to the park than alone!

~Use mobile ticketing

If it is an option, use your mobile device for your ticket instead of printing out your pass. This saves on paper and reduces the need to find a place to recycle the ticket at the end of the day. For the water parks in your area that only offer paper tickets, recommend switching to mobile options in the suggestion box/survey.

~Bring your reusable water bottles and pack your own food (if allowed)

Staying hydrated is crucial at a water park, but instead of purchasing disposable plastic water bottles, bring your own reusable bottles. Many parks have water fountains where you can refill your bottle throughout the day. If the water park allows you to bring your own food, pack it in reusable containers. Don’t forget the utensils too!

~Opt for eco-friendly swimwear

When choosing what to wear to the parks, try to pick eco-friendly swimwear as much as possible. Buy your suit secondhand, pick those made with recycled plastics, or support a sustainable swimsuit brand. The best option – wear what you already have in your closet!

~Choose natural sunscreens

Protecting your skin from the sun is essential, but many sunscreens contain chemicals that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems. Choose mineral-based, biodegradable sunscreens that are safer for the environment, especially if the water park includes natural water bodies.

~Follow the rules and dispose of waste properly!

Most parks have clear signage on where to dispose of waste. Make use of recycling bins if they’re available. If you notice a lack of recycling options, consider taking recyclables home to dispose of them properly.
