Sustainable Alternatives to Halloween Candy

While Halloween is a great time for kids and candy, my journey towards lower waste has made me rethink this classic tradition… All of that candy is wrapped in (you guessed it) plastic, which ends up in our landfills. Trick-or-treating is a highlight for many children, so it wouldn’t be fair to scrap the tradition altogether. This year, consider sustainable alternatives to Halloween candy that are not only better for the planet but also offer enjoyable treats for everyone. Here’s a complete list of eco substitutes:

~Fruit

Instead of candy, opt for something that is already packed full of natural sugar (and nutrients too!). Apples and clementines are great things to pass out; they work perfectly for zero waste lunches after Halloween is over.

~Non-food treats

Consider giving out non-food items that children can enjoy beyond the holiday. Small toys, stickers, temporary tattoos, and crafting supplies made from sustainable materials can be excellent treats. You can most likely find these secondhand as well. When I was younger, a lady down the street even gave out silver dollars instead of candy!

~Edible fruit snacks

Small packets of dried fruit or fruit leathers are a healthier alternative to traditional candy and often come in minimal or compostable packaging. Choose brands that use organic fruits and sustainable practices if possible.

~Honey sticks

Honey sticks are a sweet, natural treat that can replace traditional candy. Purchase them from local farmers or beekeepers who practice sustainable beekeeping. This supports local businesses and contributes to the welfare of bee populations, crucial for a healthy ecosystem. Many farmers markets also have these in stock.

~Seed packets

Giving out seed packets can be a fun and educational treat. They inspire children to plant and nurture their own plants, whether flowers or vegetables. Choose organic seeds and include instructions for planting if possible.

~Small, reusable goodies

Small books, notebooks made from recycled paper, or pencils from sustainable wood or recycled materials can be both practical and fun. These items can be used long after Halloween, providing lasting enjoyment without harming the environment.

~Candy from the bulk bins

Buying candy in bulk reduces the amount of packaging waste. Many health food stores have bulk sections where you can fill your own containers with various candies. Make sure the parents in your area are okay with unwrapped/unsealed candy, as you wouldn’t want it to just end up in the trash after trick-or-treating.

~Organic and/or fair trade candy

If candy is a must, opt for options that are organic and fair-trade certified. These products are made without harmful pesticides and ensure fair wages and conditions for workers. Check out this list for the best suggestions of organic/fair trade candies.
