Is the Zerra & Co Zero Waste Mascara Worth It?

Hey earth muffins! I recently decided to purchase some zero waste makeup from Zerra & Co. Most of my sustainable makeup products were getting old, so I wanted to try out some new ones… Zerra & Co makes a zero waste mascara, so I knew I just had to give it a try and share my thoughts with you all. Let’s jump right into it!

What I Love About This Zero Waste Mascara

The first thing I love about this product is that it is sustainable and truly zero waste. The container is a glass vial with a metal lid, with the option to get a bamboo wand. So awesome that you can reuse the container and/or recycle it when the product is gone! Not only is the mascara in sustainable packaging, it was also shipped in reused cardboard boxes with fully recyclable packing materials.

The mascara also works great! I personally use an old wand instead of the bamboo one because the reused wand gets the product on every lash. The mascara does an excellent job of lengthening your lashes… And it is definitely buildable if you apply multiple layers.

On top of this, the mascara is a nice dark black color. Some sustainable mascaras I’ve tried before give off a more natural/subtle black color. Not this one! I would compare it to other mascaras I used to wear before my eco journey – a great option if you are looking to “blend in” and for no one to know your mascara is actually zero waste!

What Could Be Improved

After using the Clean Faced Cosmetics cake mascara for years, I honestly wish this was a cake mascara too. Once you get product on the wand, you then have excess product on it with no where to go (since the wand isn’t attached to the packaging like other mascaras). This ends up with you getting the mascara everywhere in your makeup bag or having to wash it off and waste product. I might just try to put the product in an extra tin I have and see if that makes this issue better. The glass vial may also make it difficult to travel with, which is why I would also prefer it in cake mascara form.

Like with any review here on Life of an Earth Muffin, we gotta talk about price. This mascara costs $18, which (to me at least) is on the higher end. I do like that the zero waste version of this mascara is less than the Zerra & Co mascara – a great way to get people to opt for the more sustainable version!

Overall, I do like this zero waste product. It is a nice black mascara that avoids all those pesky plastic packaging/wands. We LOVE a good sustainable product! 😊 While I do wish it were a cake mascara, I think it is a great alternative to drugstore mascaras. What makeup products have you been trying out recently? Comment below and let me know what brand of zero waste mascara I should try next!

Love,

  1. This sounds like such an interesting mascara. It’s nice that it is available in this format (tube and wand) but it definitely sounds like the cake mascara format would be better. Hopefully they will release it that way in the future! Thanks for the heads up!
