Hey earth muffins! Secondhand September is coming to a close in a few short days… But that doesn’t mean you have to stop shopping secondhand! To bid the challenge goodbye, I thought it would be fun to share my list of the best places to shop secondhand. You should always consider used items before buying new, so I hope this post is helpful to those at any stage of an eco journey.
Top Places to Shop Secondhand in Person
The very best place to start is at your local thrift stores. I’m not talking about the chains like Salvation Army (see below for those)… Local, unique, and one-of-a kind destinations are where it’s at! You can find some awesome things at these locations (especially if you follow these thrifting tips); and, most of the time these stores support local non-profits/causes in your community. So, you are helping the planet AND those in your area too!
If I can’t find something at my local thrift shops, I will then look at antique stores and/or malls in my city. While you can’t typically find as much clothing there, these stores have it covered for anything home related. Plus, you might be able to find some awesome treasures as well. You should totally shop secondhand antiques because you never know what you will find.
While I prefer local thrift stores, I do enjoy chain spots as well. Salvation Army is my favorite chain thrift store where I live, but there are plenty of options to choose from: Goodwill, Plato’s Closet, Saver’s, etc. Which chain thrifting spot is your personal favorite??
Best Places to Shop Secondhand Online
Who said secondhand shopping is limited to the stores in your area? You can even find plenty of options online! The best place to start is on Facebook Marketplace because it is still locally based. If I’m searching for something specific I just do a quick search and usually find something that will work. Check out this guide for scoring the best finds on Facebook!
You can often find free things on Freecycle or Craigslist as well. I don’t use these very often (because there aren’t many people in my area that use them which limits what is on there)… But if you are in a bigger city you might find a ton of awesome finds on there!
eBay is another great place to find secondhand items. When you search on the website, there is a specific filter for “Used” products. Make sure to use this whenever you shop on eBay!
There you have it – all of my favorite places to shop secondhand! Even though Secondhand September is almost over, that doesn’t mean you have to stop buying used over new. I personally find it much more rewarding to find amazing treasures that don’t have as much of an impact on the planet. Mother Earth (and your wallet) thanks you for shopping at these places! What is your favorite place to shop secondhand? Comment below and let me know what is missing off of this list!

Excellent suggestions! I definitely prefer to thrift in person (I like to see the item up close and there is also the thrill of the hunt to consider) but it is definitely possible to find great items online as well. There are a few etsy shops that specialize in used items as well.
