How to Celebrate a Zero Waste Memorial Day

Hey earth muffins! Memorial Day is a time to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. It’s also a day for families and friends to come together and celebrate the unofficial start of summer. Most “traditional” Memorial Day celebrations can produce a lot of waste, including disposable plates and single-use decorations. If you’re interested in celebrating Memorial Day in a more sustainable way, here are some tips for a zero waste Memorial Day celebration:

1. Use reusables (including decorations)

One of the easiest ways to reduce waste during your Memorial Day celebration is to use reusable tableware and decorations. Instead of buying disposable plates, utensils, etc., opt for reusable versions that you can wash and use at your next party. Similarly, instead of buying decorations like balloons and streamers, choose decorations that you can use again next year.

2. Have a full plant-based menu!

Choosing plant-based foods on a daily basis can help reduce your carbon footprint. For special events and holidays, try to challenge yourself to make a totally plant-based menu. Opt for meatless hot dogs, Impossible burgers, and plant-based chili to kick off your summer right! If you want to have more options, just have both meat and plant-based foods available.

3. Choose eco-friendly sunscreens and bug sprays

If you’re planning to spend time outside during your Memorial Day celebration, be sure to choose a zero waste sunscreen and/or bug spray. Traditional sunscreens and bug sprays often contain harmful chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and your health. Look for products that are made with natural ingredients instead!

4. Compost your food scraps!

One of the easiest ways to reduce food waste is to compost your scraps. Composting is an easy way to turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil that can be used to grow plants over the summer. If you don’t have a backyard compost bin, look for local composting programs in your area or find a neighbor with a bin.

Overall, you can totally have a zero waste Memorial Day this year! By using reusable tableware/decorations, planning a plant-based menu, choosing non-toxic sunscreen and bug spray, and composting food scraps, you can reduce the environmental impact of your Memorial Day celebration while still having a great time with your friends and family.
