Clean-Faced Cosmetics Foundation (and Concealer) Review: My Honest Thoughts!

Hey earth muffins! I have been using makeup from Clean-Faced Cosmetics since the very beginning of my sustainable journey. I absolutely love their mascara and have tried out the foundation powder during my college years. Before I started my new job a couple of months ago, I figured I would try out the Clean-Faced Cosmetics foundation (which also can be used a concealer!). It was my first time going back to the office in a year, so I hadn’t been wearing foundation in awhile… I’ve had some time to test out this product, so let’s jump right into the review!

What I Love About the Clean-Faced Cosmetics Foundation

Obviously I love that this company is zero waste! It is run by a woman named Laura in Grand Rapids, MI – and she has been seeing so much success on Etsy that she recently opened up her own website! 🎉 Her products are made with natural, eco-friendly ingredients which is important to help your skin stay chemical free. All the makeup products come in some sort of metal or glass container; if you ask for a refill of a product, she will mail it over in a compostable bag instead! Supporting small businesses like this is great because I know the products are all top notch AND zero waste as well.

For the Clean-Faced Cosmetics Foundation, I bought “Light” in the 1/2 oz travel size. There are three shades directly offered on the website, but you can also order a custom foundation. I love the inclusivity of that! It seems like many makeup brands just offer a few colors. A lot of people have to mix two shades, so I love that you can get a foundation that matches your skin perfectly. I also enjoy that Laura includes some samples with each order – I got a tin of some mauve eyeshadow that is super pretty!

The foundation itself has a really nice creamy consistency. The base of the foundation is organic shea butter, so it goes on smooth and is easy to blend in to your skin. I personally haven’t had much luck with it as a foundation (see the dislikes section below for details); but, it works absolutely amazing as a cream eyeshadow and/or highlight! It isn’t drying either, which is such a plus.

Lastly, I think the price is spot on for a zero waste foundation/concealer. The travel size was only $5 and will last a long time. Plus, Clean-Faced Cosmetics always has some sort of sale going on – you can get a nice discount (and even free shipping) most of the time! I love a company making sustainable products more accessible to many people. If you are looking for sustainable makeup, I highly recommend giving this brand a try!

What I Dislike About this Foundation

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find success with this product as an actual foundation. The color is just too gray for my skin tone. According to the product description, it is normal for the foundation to look “ashy” and “speckled”. It is supposed to look a bit ashy when you first put it on, but will then oxidize on your skin and fade into something less gray. While I did notice the grayness fade, it was still too ashy for my super pale skin. Like I mentioned above, it still works for my skintone as a great cream eyeshadow and highlight. I can’t really knock the product for just not matching my face, but the ashiness is something to be aware of if you also buy this foundation!

Since I bought the travel size, it is hard to use a foundation brush with the small tin. This resulted in me having to use my fingers to apply the foundation. I’ve never been a huge fan of applying makeup with my fingers, as I’ve had acne-prone skin my whole life. No matter how clean my hands are, I just don’t like the idea of double dipping into the makeup (and then using the makeup for another 6 months or so). While this wouldn’t be a problem if you got the full sized product, I just wanted to mention it regardless!

Final Thoughts on the Clean-Faced Cosmetics Foundation

Overall, I wasn’t a huge fan of this foundation as an actual foundation due to it not matching my skin the way I would like. I am thankful that, true to zero waste living, I am able to repurpose it as eyeshadow and highlight! The foundation is zero waste, priced well, and easy to apply/use. Clean-Faced Cosmetics has always been one of my favorite sustainable makeup brands… I highly recommend looking at all their products (especially the mascara)! Jenna ♥
