How to Support Vegans as a Non-Vegan

Hey earth muffins! The start of 2023 means it is the month long challenge of Veganuary. If you aren’t vegan, you can still participate in this challenge by supporting those who do follow plant-based diets. Or, maybe you can try to eat a few more plant-based meals each week! Keep reading for a full list of ways to support vegans as a non-vegan.

1. Be an advocate for plant-based diets

A great way to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle is to switch to some sort of plant-based diet. Even if you aren’t vegan (or think that the vegan diet is too strict), it is important to be an advocate for all types of sustainable diets. Let others know about alternative diet options and educate those around you on why these are a great way to be more eco-friendly.

2. Skip out on vegan jokes

I’m not sure when jokes about vegan eating (and vegans in general) became so popular… Seems like those with meat-filled diets got scared of their popularity and thought jokes would deter others from switching to a more sustainable diet. Try to avoid participating in telling jokes or spreading memes about vegan culture – spread the benefits instead! 😊

3. Buy vegan products

Even if you aren’t vegan, you can still try out vegan things. I’m talking about food AND other commerical goods that are made vegan. With the rise of plant-based dieters, there has been an increase in vegetarian and vegan products at the grocery store. And a lot of them are super tasty! Vote with your dollars for these non-meat options – you might find yourself a new favorite snack!

4. Make it easy on vegans when they eat with you

As a vegetarian, I know that it can sometimes be difficult to eat places who don’t consider plant-based diets. I’ve had many work events where I can’t eat anything but chips because the person planning the event didn’t think about those who refuse meat. To support the vegans around you, make it a goal to always have a vegan option at parties/events. This is such an easy way to make those on a plant-based diet feel more welcomed.

  1. These are great suggestions! I’m not sure why there are so many vegan jokes either, but I will make sure to avoid them at all costs. Everyone deserves respect.
