Hey earth muffins! If you can’t tell by the red and pink aisles at every major store, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. While a huge teddy bear is cute and cuddly for a while, Teddy will (unfortunately) end up as trash in a landfill in the near future. So, what gifts can you give that won’t harm the planet?? Here is a list of the best sustainable valentine gifts to give this Valentine’s Day!
The BEST Eco-Friendly Gifts to Give This Valentine’s Day:
One of the best things to give your valentine is not even a gift at all – opt for an experience of some sort. This could be tickets to a favorite band, a coupon for a local date night, or even a small trip. Choosing experiences is awesome because it reduces the environmental impact of a material (typically plastic wrapped) gift. Try to pick local experiences whenever possible! 😊
For valentines with a sweet tooth, you don’t have to buy a cheesy box full of chocolates. Instead, purchase a bunch of local sweets! Shop around the bakeries in your area – find cookies, cupcakes, truffles, etc. Not only will you satisfy your valentine’s craving for sugar, you might find a new sweet shop to hit up year round.
While money isn’t always seen as “thoughtful”, it is an option for a sustainable valentine gift… If your partner has been saving up for a trip or to pay off a debt or to buy a new electronic, contribute some extra money to help them reach their goal. You might have spent this money on a teddy bear or wasteful present otherwise, so it’s a win-win (especially for the planet).
Additional Valentine Gifts to Give:
There are plenty of sustainable alternatives to paper valentine cards; one of my favorites is to give a houseplant instead. Skip the paper and the (eventual) dead roses and give your valentine something that will make them smile all year. If your partner isn’t a fan of plants, maybe a bouquet of felt flowers will do the trick.
Last but not least, a great gift for Valentine’s Day is a home cooked meal. While going out to a local restaurant is fun and supports the community, it can be super busy on February 14th. Take the time to cook up your partner’s favorite dishes and have a romantic dinner in the comfort of your own home.
This Valentine’s Day, opt for a more sustainable gift for your love. Avoid the huge teddy bears and plastic boxes of chocolates, as those just end up in the landfill in a few weeks or years. Give an experience, a home cooked meal, or a tray of locally baked sweets. 😍 The opportunities are endless! What are you doing for Valentine’s Day this year? Comment below!
