How to Start a Zero Waste Lifestyle: The Zero Waste Kit You Need!

Hey earth muffins! It can be overwhelming to start sustainable living. There are SO many eco-friendly swaps to make and things to do to reduce your impact on Mother Earth. To help newbies onboard this lifestyle, a lot of eco-conscious companies sell “zero waste starter packs” to help with the transition… Earth Zero was kind enough to send me their zero waste kit; so, let’s answer this question: is a zero waste starter kit worth it???

What Comes in The Zero Waste Kit

This zero waste pack is sold on Amazon (affiliate link), which makes it accessible to basically anyone. The items included are:

  • 4 Beeswax wraps
  • Reusable, mesh produce bag
  • Biodegradable sponge
  • Furoshiki wrap
  • Bamboo toothbrush (with removable head)

Are These Items Helpful to the Eco Newbie?

A great place to start making eco changes is in your kitchen. Having a reusable produce bag allows you to reduce plastic when grocery shopping. I love that this bag is mesh, as it makes me feel like I’m in France at a farmer’s market (anyone else? haha). The beeswax wraps are a great way to pack zero waste lunches or store leftovers in the fridge – they work great! If you don’t have a dish washing brush, this biodegradable sponge is an excellent way to avoid using plastic ones. And you can compost it when it is at the end of its life!

The fact that this bamboo toothbrush comes with a removable head is such a great idea. Instead of composting a bunch of bamboo each time you change your toothbrush, this allows you to just compost the head. Reusing is key to sustainable living!

The last thing included in this kit is a furoshiki wrap, which can be used to wrap presents. This zero waste starter pack would be an amazing gift for someone who has been putting off making those eco changes (but is interested in doing so). 🥰 You could open the Amazon box and wrap everything up in this furoshiki before giving it to them as a gift.

Is a Zero Waste Kit Worth It?

For those overwhelmed at the start of sustainable living, a kit like this can be a good investment. For only $30 you get a few essentials to start reducing your impact. However, it is important to remember that a huge tenant of eco-friendly living is to reuse what you have AND reduce what you consume. Instead of purchasing a starter kit, it might be better for the planet to make your own kit from what you already have around the house.
