Hey earth muffins! I’m a sucker for trying out new things… So I was super excited when ModernKind reached out to me and asked if I wanted to try out their new refillable, zero waste shampoo powder. Of course I did! After I used up the rest of my current shampoo bar, I started using it right away… Keep reading for a full ModernKind shampoo review!
What I Love About this Product!
The first thing I love about ModernKind’s shampoo powder is that it is truly zero waste. The powder comes in a metal bottle that can be either 1) refilled with their refill packs or 2) reused/recycled. The refill packages are compostable AND the packaging is all recyclable when it is shipped to your house. The brand definitely cares about the planet, and it shows!
Another bonus of this shampoo is that it is full of clean ingredients. Buying zero waste shampoos like shampoo bars and powders usually ends up with better ingredients because the product is not watered down with water. I personally love that this powder is white – no bright dyes like a bunch of the Lush shampoo bars I’ve tried in the past (I’m looking at you New shampoo bar!).
Other Things I Like
The next thing I wanted to mention in this ModernKind shampoo review is how great it smells. Scent isn’t a huge thing for me, but it can be for a lot of people. This powder smells delightfully like a bright, clean lavender but it isn’t overpowering like lavender can sometimes be. We love a good, clean shampoo that smells great!
Like with basically all of the review on Life of an Earth Muffin, I wanted to mention price. For ModernKind shampoo it will cost you $12 for the trial size (perfect if you aren’t sure you will like a powder shampoo or to test if it will work in your hair) or $32 for a full bottle AND a refill pack. To me, this is a fine price for a high quality shampoo that has a much better impact on the planet. A lot of brands charge more than this, but it is definitely more expensive than a lot of cheaper shampoos.
What Could Be Improved
The only negative I could think of with this product is that it can take a bit of time to get used to, since it is a shampoo powder. The product does lather which is great (and a couple of shampoo bars I’ve tried never could lather); however, you have to get the hang of how much powder/water to use in the shower. The steps to use it are simple:
- Wet hair and hands thoroughly
- Sprinkle a small amount of the powder onto your palm. Rub together to make a paste.
- Rub onto scalp/hair to lather!
Don’t get discouraged if you can’t get the perfect lather right away! Keep using the shampoo and you will get the hang of it eventually.
Overall, ModernKind is a great zero waste shampoo alternative for those looking for a new product to try. The shampoo works great, it smells amazing, and their low impact on the planet definitely shows. What shampoo are you currently using? Comment below and let me know if you’d try ModernKind!
