What is Wishcycling? (And How To Avoid It)

Hey earth muffins! Recycling is an essential practice that helps conserve resources and reduce waste. However, an increasingly common phenomenon known as “wishcycling” has emerged, undermining the effectiveness of recycling efforts. To avoid wishcycling and contribute to more effective recycling practices, here are a few things to keep in mind:

So, What is “Wishcycling”?

“Wishcycling” refers to the act of placing items in the recycling bin with the hope that they will be recycled, even if they are not accepted or recyclable in your local recycling program. While the intention behind wishcycling is often positive, it is definitely the way to NOT recycle. It can lead to contamination, higher costs, and ultimately undermine recycling systems. It should be avoided at all costs!

How to Avoid Wishcycling:

The first thing to know is how to recycle in your area. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the specific recycling guidelines in your city. These vary from one municipality to another, so it is important to know what your centers will take (or not take). Call your local recycling authority or visit their website to access detailed information about accepted materials and sorting requirements.

Secondly, make sure you prepare your recyclables correctly before placing them in the recycling bin. Rinse out containers to remove any food residue, remove caps and lids (as they may have different recycling requirements), flatten or break down boxes to save space, and make sure everything is dry.

If you aren’t sure if it can be recycled, then DON’T put it in the bin! It is better to stick to recycling common, basic items to ensure it is properly recycled. Safe recyclable basics include paper, cardboard, glass bottles, and aluminum cans. It’s better to recycle a few items correctly than to contaminate an entire batch of recyclables!

Do your best with specialized items! For things that are not accepted in your regular recycling program, research alternative recycling options. Many communities have collection events or drop-off locations for specific materials like electronics, batteries, or hazardous waste. Take advantage of these opportunities!

  1. This is so helpful! I know they’ve changed what can and cannot be recycled where I live (multiple times) so it creates a bit of confusion. It’s definitely important to know what can be recycled where you live!
