How to Zero Waste Your Laundry Room

With the average household doing hundreds of loads of laundry each year, the potential for waste is significant. From water and energy usage to plastic detergent containers, doing this chore seems like it always has a negative impact on the planet. However, by adopting some sustainable practices, you too can make your laundry routine more environmentally friendly! Here are the best practical tips to help you zero waste your laundry room:

1. Choose eco-friendly detergents and stain removers

Opt for laundry detergents that do not come in plastic bottles. Many brands now offer detergent strips or powders that come in paper packaging or cardboard boxes instead. Alternatively, you can find local refill stores where you can refill your own containers, completely eliminating packaging waste. In addition to detergent, switch to more eco-friendly fabric softeners and stain removers as well. Lemon juice, baking soda, and white vinegar are effective against many types of stains and are safe for the environment. Or you can try out bar stain sticks, like this one from Tangie.

2. Use wool dryer balls

Instead of single-use dryer sheets (which often contain chemicals and create a lot of waste), switch to wool dryer balls. These reusable balls naturally soften your clothes without the use of harsh chemicals. They can also reduce drying time which saves energy. Wool dryer balls can last for thousands of loads too, making them an economical and eco-friendly choice.

3. Choose a sustainable washer and dryer

When it’s time to replace your appliances, pick ENERGY STAR-certified washers and dryers. These can make a big impact in your laundry room, as high-efficiency washing machines use significantly less water and energy compared to traditional models. Front loading machines are usually more eco-friendly compared to top loaders as well.

4. Run full loads on cool (and skip extra rinses)

To reduce your impact the most, run full loads on the cool setting and skip those extra rinses. Heating water for laundry uses a lot of energy. By switching to cool (or cold) water for washing your clothes, you can save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. Skipping those extra rinses is another great way to zero waste your laundry room.

5. Hang dry everything

Whenever possible, air dry your clothes instead of using a dryer. Hanging your clothes to dry can significantly reduce energy consumption and extend the life of your clothing by reducing wear and tear from the dryer. If space is an issue, consider a retractable clothesline or a foldable drying rack.

6. Try making your own laundry products

Consider making your own laundry detergent and/or fabric softener to truly embrace the zero waste lifestyle. There are many recipes available online that use simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils. This not only reduces packaging waste but also ensures that you know exactly what’s going into your laundry.

7. Use non-plastic laundry baskets

If you already own plastic laundry baskets, then keep using them until they break and cannot be used anymore. When it is time to replace them, opt for a non-plastic option (or buy one from the thrift store!). Reducing the plastic in your laundry room is a great way to be more sustainable when doing laundry.

8. Take care of your washer and dryer

Regular maintenance of your washing machine and dryer can extend their lifespan and improve their efficiency. Clean your dryer’s lint trap after each use, inspect and clean the washing machine’s gasket and detergent drawer, and occasionally run a cleaning cycle with vinegar to remove any odors and buildup. Have someone repair your machines (if possible) before replacing them too!

By implementing these simple changes, you can significantly reduce your household’s impact and contribute to a more sustainable planet. It isn’t too challenging to zero waste your laundry room – start with one or two changes and gradually incorporate more as you become comfortable with new habits. 1. I do a few of these things already (wash on cold and hang dry clothes) but there are a few other switches I can make as well. Thank you for this!
