Hey earth muffins! Today I’m coming at you with another shampoo bar review… It seems like I’ve been reviewing these a lot lately but it’s just because I like to try new ones whenever one is used up. 😀 I picked up this bar from my local zero waste store (something I am so lucky to have nearby!). It is by the brand Tiani Body Care, which is a Michigan company based out of a town near Ann Arbor. Let’s jump right into my Tiani shampoo bar review!
What I Love About This Shampoo Bar
As I mention in all my shampoo bar reviews, I love that this product is naked and creates no packaging waste. I picked it up from the shelf and took it home in my reusable bag – no plastic needed! Bar products look much better in my shower too, which is why I prefer bars to bottles. This product is shaped like an octagon instead of a circle like the bars from Lush. I personally love that it has a flat bottom, as it helps them stand up in my Ethique soap saver container (affiliate link). Plus, the bar is thicker too which makes it easier to hold onto when I am washing my hair.
While I love a good sustainable beauty product, I also love one that is many other things: cruelty free, plant based, biodegradable, sulfate free, and vegan. What a great list of pros! I’m always pretty picky when it comes to beauty products because they get up close and personal with my most sensitive parts. A huge win that this shampoo bar checks a lot of boxes for me!
Other Things I Like
Another pro of this product is that it smells great in a subtle way. Some of the Lush bars I’ve tried (I’m looking at you Honey I Washed my Hair) had super overwhelming smells. While they smell great, it is sometimes my preference to have simpler, subtle scents. You can definitely pick up the grapefruit notes right away. I don’t really know exactly what patchouli is supposed to smell like, but there is an earthy note to the bar that I really like as well.
I think the last positive I want to mention in this Tiani shampoo bar review is that the bar itself doesn’t have any crazy dyes in it. Lush likes to make their products neon for some reason… This is annoying because I don’t want dyes near me and they sometimes leave stains in my shower too. The Tiani bar is a gorgeous light pink hue (almost a gray in certain lighting). I love how springy the pink color is!
What Could Be Better for This Shampoo Bar
Alas, I don’t think this bar does the best job of keeping my hair grease free. 🙁 I have a tricky scalp to deal with so that totally doesn’t mean this bar is trash or anything. I think it does a good job of shampooing my hair, but my scalp just isn’t super happy with. I’ve definitely tried worse (aka the JR Liggett shampoo), but I don’t think I would repurchase this bar. I would be interested to see if another shampoo bar by Tiani Body Care would work for me or not….
Another thing I dislike about this product is that it doesn’t lather very well. While I understand you can just rub the bar on your head while you are washing your hair, I personally like my shampoo bars to lather. This saves product and makes the bar last longer too; so, I was pretty disappointed that this product didn’t lather like I wanted it to.
Final Thoughts on the Tiani Shampoo Bar
Overall, I think this brand makes excellent shampoo bars – this one just didn’t work for my hair/scalp. I love how zero waste and eco-friendly the bar is. And it ticks a lot of additional boxes in terms of being healthy for your body too! While it has a lovely scent, I just didn’t like that it barely lathers and doesn’t work for my hair. But, who knows, this might be your favorite shampoo bar if you give it a try! What shampoo bar are you using currrently? It is too bad the bar is not worthy of a repurchase. Especially because it checked off a lot of important boxes! Hopefully you are able to find something else that is better suited to your needs <3
