How To Be a Sustainable Wedding Guest

Hey earth muffins! No doubt about it, wedding season is upon us! The summer months seem to be synonymous with weddings, which means you might find yourself at a ceremony or two this year. 👰‍♀️ While you obviously have little control if the wedding itself is eco-friendly, there are still ways you can be a sustainable wedding guest! Every small thing counts, so make it a goal of yours to reduce your impact on the planet at all events this summer.

~ Wear a secondhand outfit.

This is one of the easiest ways to be a sustainable wedding guest. Instead of buying a new dress for every wedding, shop your closet and be a proud outfit repeater. Or, borrow something from a friend! If you need to find something more specific, hit up all the secondhand stores in your area. You’d be surprised at how many cute fancy dresses are at the thrift store!

~ Opt for the veggie dinner option.

When you are invited to a wedding, you often have the option to select your dinner for the reception in advance. Most people these days have a vegetable option for those on a plant-based diet. Opt for that meal to avoid any meat consumption at the event! Maybe even convince other family members to do the same to reduce the wedding’s impact further.

~ Avoid any single-use items

Most weddings create some sort of single-use waste: confetti, wedding programs, utensils for appetizers, etc. Do your best to avoid all of these items at the event. Take your wedding program home to be recycled. Wait until dinner is served on actual plates to avoid any disposable ones. It is easy to avoid single-use items if you keep it top of mind throughout the evening!

~ Don’t take the wedding favor at the end of the night.

Favors are a tradition of many weddings. But, most of them are tossed into the trash when guest get home. To be a sustainable wedding guest, opt to leave your favor behind instead. If you have to take one home, do your best to find a use for the favor as well as any packaging it is in. Get creative on how you can reuse them!

  1. Oh, these are excellent suggestions! In the past, I was always buying a new dress for every wedding, but I don’t do that anymore. It’s easier on the budget and also good for the planet. Win win!
