4 Steps To Living A More Eco-Friendly Lifestyle in the New Year

It’s important that you do your part when it comes to caring for the environment and how you choose to live. Your actions have an impact on the world and overall sustainability. If you aren’t making an effort to go green already then it may be time to start. Here are four steps to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle so that you can ensure your efforts are having a positive impact on the environment and in your home.

1. Reuse & Recycle

Live a more eco-friendly lifestyle by committing to reusing and recycling. Make sure you’re not just tossing all items into the garbage bin and that you know what can be recycled and what can’t. If you do the grocery shopping at home then bring your own bags to cut back on plastic. If you end up using the store’s plastic bags then save them to reuse at home for another matter. There are many items around your house you can consider reusing that you may not have thought about previously. For example, you can use plastic bottles as storage or turn wine bottles into candle holders.

2. Use Less Paper

Cut back on your paper use if you want to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. There are many opportunities to do so daily at work and in your home. One of the best ways to cut back is to print less and do more online. Also, if you’re someone who gets paper statements in the mail for your Bonds trading and other investments and for your bills then consider making the switch to receiving paperless statements by email instead. Think about using a cloth to clean up around your house instead of always grabbing for the paper towels as well.

3. Cut Down on Energy & Waste in Your Home

Another step to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle is to cut down on energy and waste in your home. Purchase the right kind of light bulbs and turn your thermostat down a degree or two. Also, weather-strip and caulk your doors and windows and turn lights and electronics off when you’re not using them or you aren’t in the room. If you have old appliances and can afford to upgrade them then consider installing energy-efficient appliances as well. Eat less meat and then make sure that you consume your leftovers or make a new meal out of them instead of throwing food away. As far as water goes, take shorter showers and drink your tap water if it is decent in your area.

4. Borrow Instead of Buying

Think before you buy new or make a purchase when you’re out and about. Live a more eco-friendly lifestyle by borrowing instead of always buying. You will save money this way and will have what you need without needing to consume more goods. You’ll also be contributing to less waste build-up in the landfills. Try shopping at consignment and second-hand stores or search your community or the web for unique items people are selling.
