How to Have a Plastic Free Tailgate for Football Season!

Hey earth muffins! Football season is upon us (which my fiancé doesn’t let me forget – I swear there is some sort of football game on every night lol!). Tailgating is a cherished tradition in football culture, bringing fans together to celebrate their favorite teams. However, it often generates a substantial amount of plastic waste. This post will provide you with tips to host a fun, plastic free football tailgate without any need for plastics.

Top Tips for Hosting a Plastic Free Event:

  1. Opt for reusable dinnerware, glasses, and utensils – There should be no need for the dreaded red Solo cups… If you are worried about not having enough reusables at the event, have friends bring their own to the tailgate!
  2. Use linens and cloth napkins – Bonus points if you have linens to match the colors of your favorite team.
  3. Make your food from scratch and/or host a potluck style tailgate – A lot of party foods come in plastic containers, so take the time to cook some delicious foods instead! It can be helpful to have friends/family bring dishes to pass as well… And don’t forget to have some plant-based options too!
  4. BBQ the eco-friendly way! – For those who want to cook on the grill, there are plenty of ways to have an eco-friendly BBQ. Again, make sure to offer plant-based hot dogs and/or hamburgers to lower meat consumption at your tailgate.
  5. Offer drinks in plastic-free packaging – Have a water or lemonade station to avoid plastic water bottles. Keep the cooler stocked with drinks in aluminum cans or glass bottles.
  6. Have food waste and recycling containers by the trash – This will ensure the tailgate waste is disposed of properly at the end of the night!
  7. Don’t buy any cheesy fan accessories (like pom poms or foam fingers) – There is no need for any of that; just use your hands/voice to get in the spirit to cheer on your favorite team!
