Tips for Celebrating a Sustainable Oktoberfest This Year

Hey earth muffins! Oktoberfest is a time for merriment, good food, and great beer. However, with concerns about the environment growing, it’s essential to celebrate this festival in a way that’s sustainable and responsible to our planet. In this post, we’ll explore how you can have a fantastic celebration while minimizing your environmental impact – a truly sustainable Oktoberfest!

1. Pick the right beers (or non-alcoholic beverages)

Whether you are celebrating the holiday overseas or having a party at home with friends, the drinks are essential. Opt for local, organic, or craft beers (or non-alcoholic beverages) that support sustainable brewing practices. If possible, drink from reusable glass steins or pick beers that are packaged in recyclable materials like glass or metal.

2. Follow the best tips for a zero waste party

If you are hosting your own event, make sure to take all the steps to have a zero waste party! Traditional parties create a lot of waste, so you want to avoid that at all costs.

3. Avoid single use items when out on the town

Many bars and event venues host gatherings for Oktoberfest… But that doesn’t mean you need to throw your sustainable values out the window! Avoid as many single use items as you can by bringing your own (mugs, cutlery, etc.) or by just going without.

4. Dispose of your waste properly

If you are having your own party, make sure to have waste, trash, and food waste containers so that everything gets disposed of properly at the end of the night. When you are out on the town, still take the time to dispose of things in the right bin. If a bar doesn’t recycle there is no shame in bringing the container(s) back to your house to properly dispose of them!

5. If you must dress up, source your look secondhand

For those who really want to get into the spirit of the event, consider repurposing or borrowing costumes from family or friends who have celebrated Oktoberfest before. It isn’t mandatory to wear anything specific, so try to source your party attire from the thrift store. You never know what you might find there!
