Hey earth muffins! I can’t believe 2024 is only a couple of short days away! I always enjoy the start of a new year because you get to plan out vacations, holidays, and major events. And there are plenty of environmental days that you should be marking on your calendars too! In this blog post, I’ll share the major monthly eco events and holidays, helping you align your year with a commitment to a greener planet. Let’s get right into it!
January
- Veganuary – This month, take the opportunity to opt for a plant-based diet. Even if you don’t want to go fully vegan, there are ways you can support vegans for those who do. It’s a great way to start off the new year!
February
- World Wetlands Day – This annual event takes place every February 2nd. Wetlands are such an interesting ecosystem, so this is the perfect time to help support any in your area.
March
- Global Recycling Day – Recycling is celebrated every March 18th. It is important to know your recycling rules and what plastics can (or cannot) be recycled where you live!
- World Water Day – This event happens every March 22nd. Water is essential to every living being on Earth, so it just makes sense to have an annual day celebrating all the ways to conserve water.
- Earth Hour – This event happens every year in late March. To show your support for the Earth, participate in this hour by turning off your lights to raise awareness for the planet.
April
- Earth Day – April 22nd is Earth Day! The perfect day to get outside and show some appreciation for our wonderful Earth.
May
- World Fair Trade Day – Celebrate brands that are fair trade on the second Saturday of May.
- World Bee Day – We love our bee friends… Which is why May 20th is the annual celebration of bees!
June
- World Oceans Day – Our oceans are being impacted by climate change… The 8th is a great time to support them.
- World Rainforest Day – June 22nd celebrates the rainforest. These diverse environments are being impacted by climate change as well. It’s important to raise awareness for them on this day!
July
- Plastic Free July – Are you up to the challenge to go a whole month without plastic?? There are so many great ways to participate in this event!
August
- International Day of the World’s Indigenous People – This is celebrated on August 9th and is an official United Nations observance.
September
- Secondhand September – Another month long challenge… Avoid new items and purchase them secondhand instead!
- Clean Up the World Weekend – Join family, friends, neighbors, etc. on the third weekend of September to do your part and clean up a bit of the world.
October
- World Food Day – This day (Oct. 16th) celebrates how important water is to the production of food.
November
- America Recycles Day – On the 15th, make sure to celebrate your recycling centers (and of course recycle what you can!).
- Buy Nothing Day – This event, also known as Black Friday, is a day to avoid shopping and overconsumption. There are plenty of ways to have an eco Black Friday!
December
- Human Rights Day – December 10th is an observance of all things human rights, which goes hand-in-hand with sustainability!
Each month offers opportunities to align celebrations with sustainability. By incorporating eco-friendly events and holidays into your calendar, you not only contribute to a healthier planet but also inspire others to join the movement as well. Which of these events will you be celebrating??
