When people think of mascara, the first thing that comes to mind are often the colorful plastic tubes it is sold in. But did you know there is a totally zero waste, plastic-free alternative that doesn’t even require packaging?? Lush’s planet-friendly swap can replace all those plastic tubes in your beauty bag. Keep reading for a complete Lush Naked mascara review, including all the goods (and bads??) about this innovative product.
What I Love About This Product
First off, the fact that you can buy a package free mascara is incredible! There are plenty of zero waste mascaras out there; but, they often come in some sort of packaging that has to be reused or recycled. (This might be in the form of cake mascara, mascara in a refillable tube, or even a glass tube.) Lush’s product is sold like many of their products – package free. This is a huge win for Mother Earth, and a great step in the right direction for sustainable makeup.
Another positive is that it is easy to use and works great. The cyclinder of mascara has a hollow interior – wet your favorite mascara brush (or use one they provide), rub around on the inside of the hole, and apply to lashes like normal. Easy peasy! You can get some great color if you apply multiple layers as well. Be sure to keep your tube free from water and in a dry spot to avoid any cracking in the product.
The mascara is also easy to remove at the end of the day. Water or your favorite makeup remover will do the trick without the need to scrub. The mascara doesn’t melt off your lashes during the day – even after working 12+ hour days during tax season my lashes look great! (Just note that this is obviously not a waterproof product)
Other Things I Like
With any product review on this blog, it is important to discuss price. For $14, you get a 0.4 oz tube of mascara. While this might not sound like a lot, you don’t use much each time you use it. It should last you months if you take care of it properly. While there are cheaper drugstore mascaras, I find it similar in price to most affordable makeup brands. A small price to pay for the planet!
Lush also has you covered with different shades too. There are currently four colors on the market – black, brown, blue, and burgundy. I went with black (“Orca”) but will be picking up the brown (“Earth”) the next time I’m near a Lush store.
What Could Be Improved
A small downside to a package free mascara is that you have to touch the product each time you apply it. This can leave a small amount of color on your hands. Not a big deal as it is easily washable, but something to think about. This also can create a mess wherever you store your makeup; I kept the cardboard box it came in to keep my makeup drawer nice and clean!
Lastly, I wish you could decide if you want the plastic wands when you order this mascara online. It comes with three options and it seems like a) people will typically use only one regularly and b) people might not even want another wand. Could save a bit of plastic to allow you to choose if you want that for this zero waste mascara!
There you have it – my Lush Naked mascara review. I was so excited to give this product a try! And it definitely lived up to my excitement. I would highly recommend you all check out Lush’s package free mascara – such a win for sustainability! What mascara are you currently using??

This is such a great idea. It’s wonderful that is packaging free and is fairly affordable. (Many mascaras at the drugstore are around $14 now. They have really increased in price more recently!) I always appreciate you highlighting the things that work well and the ways the product could be improved. Thank you for your honesty <3
