bookmark_borderHow to be Zero Waste on a Road Trip

Hey earth muffins! Summer is just around the corner which means one thing – time for some vacations! Road trips are one of my favorite ways to take some time off work. 😎 I recently took a short trip to attend a graduation, and it was super fun… Until I tested positive for COVID when I got home. Yupp, after 2+ years and 3 vaccines Mister Corona still got me. I’m (thankfully) all better now and hoping my next road trip doesn’t come with any surprise illnesses. Here are my tips on how to have the best zero waste road trip this summer!

Tip #1: Pick the most eco-friendly car you have access to!

Depending on who/how many people you are traveling with, you might have more than one vehicle to choose from. While things like number of seats and vehicle age are obviously important, make sure to consider each car’s environmental impact as well. Pick the car that is a hybrid or gets the best gas mileage to reduce your emissions on the road. (And this will save you money too with how crazy gas prices are right now.)

Hey earth muffins! Back in February I reviewed my Allbirds flats for you all. I still wear those shoes to the office often – when my Nike sneakers finally wore out (after 4+ years might I add!), I thought it would be a good idea to invest in some sustainable running shoes. Allbirds was obviously the brand that came to mind first. Let’s jump right into my Allbirds Wool Runners review!

Hey earth muffins! If you didn’t know already, World Bee Day is this Friday, May 20th. 🐝 Bees have been negatively impacted by climate change; it is super important that we protect them. If the bees die, we will die too. While the outlook for bees has been getting better over time, there is still work to do. So, here are some easy ways to celebrate World Bee Day to support our yellow and black friends!

Plant some flowers!

Bees are pollinators, which means they love flowers. To support local bees in your area, I suggest planting some flowers in your backyard this summer. It is even better if you find local flowers for the native bees! Not only are flowers a gift to the bees, they are also super pretty to look at as well. Who doesn’t love some gorgeous colors in the backyard?

bookmark_borderThe Best Plant-Based Fast Food Options – My Favorite Quick & Easy Places to Eat

Hey earth muffins! In a recent post, I shared my tips on how to eat plant-based at a restaurant without just getting salad all the time. I love a good salad, but it is nice to have more options to choose from. For those of us on plant-based diets, it can be harder to eat at fast food places… But I’ve found that a few chains are super accomodating! 😊 Here are my favorite plant-based fast food options – let me know if you have others that aren’t on this list.

Taco Bell

In my opinion, Taco Bell is the holy grail when it comes to vegetarian options. They have a whole section of their menu called “Veggie Cravings” that is full of bean and potato options. My favorite Taco Bell hack is that you can order any of your favorite items and just replace the meat with black beans. Such a great way to reduce your meat consumption even if you aren’t on a plant-based diet! I typically go for the Black Bean Chalupa Supreme – it is so tasty! 🌮

Hey earth muffins! May 14th is World Fair Trade Day! If you aren’t familiar with this event, it is an annual global celebration held on the second Saturday of May. It is a time to support small farmers, producers, and artisans (and their families!) to create more sustainable and healthy communities around the world. Fair trade is amazing and impactful; here are my suggestions on how to celebrate World Fair Trade Day this year!

Shop from some fair trade stores!

While I don’t often shop for new items (I’m typically a new-to-me girl), I definitely support some fair trade shopping to celebrate this day! I bet you a ton of your local small businesses carry a plethora of items you can purchase – just look for a fair trade label. If you aren’t sure how to identify “fair trade”, ask a friendly staff person in the shop and hopefully they can help. 😊 There are also plenty of online retailers that only sell goods that are fair trade. WorldFinds has amazing accessories (see my Kantha jewelry haul from them) and Fair Trade Winds is another website that has an awesome selection of everything from home decor to felt flowers.

bookmark_borderI Tried a Silent Retreat – Here are my Thoughts!

Hey earth muffins! As I shared on a recent Instagram post, I went on a silent retreat a couple weekends ago. I had been wanting to try out a retreat like this for quite some time… And thought it would be fun to share the experience with you all! Before jumping into my opinions on the retreat itself, let’s first get into what exactly a silent retreat is.

What is a Silent Retreat?

There is no single definition of what a silent retreat is. Depending on the person, it can mean a lot of different things. But, a retreat of this type centers around one thing: silence. You can go on a retreat like this for religious or spiritual reasons to get closer to God/whomever you believe in. Or you can go on the retreat to restore or rest or to just force yourself to think for a bit. There are legit retreat centers that have these, but you can also just plan your own like I did (which is usually the cheaper option as well).

Cinco De Mayo is this Thursday 🥳 Regardless if you plan on throwing a party or just cook some authentic Mexican food by yourself, there are ways to make it more eco-friendly and good for the planet. Here are my suggestions on how to celebrate a zero waste Cinco De Mayo this year!

~Educate yourself on the history of the holiday

Just like with Earth Day, Cinco De Mayo is often a day where brands advertise their products without any reference to the true meaning of the holiday. Don’t fall into the consumerism trap – make sure you understand the significance if you end up celebrating! There are plenty of ways to educate yourself: doing a Google search, reading a book, or even listening to a podcast about the topic. Learning is a great way to be sustainable too, as it is an easy way to celebrate a zero waste Cinco De Mayo.
