Hey earth muffins! For those of us on a plant-based diet, it can be challenging to get enough protein… An awesome way to add extra to our diet is to use protein powders. Earth Chimp kindly gifted me their vegan & organic protein powder to try out; I wanted to share all my thoughts about this product with you all today. Let’s jump right into it!
What I Love About Earth Chimp
First off, this is a great way to get plant-based protein (20g per serving!) for those of us on plant based diets. Not only is this product vegan, it is also dairy, soy, AND gluten free. Perfect for everyone with dietary restrictions. The protein powder is also organic and full of good ingredients without all those nasty added sugars and gums.
Hey earth muffins! I recently decided to purchase some zero waste makeup from Zerra & Co. Most of my sustainable makeup products were getting old, so I wanted to try out some new ones… Zerra & Co makes a zero waste mascara, so I knew I just had to give it a try and share my thoughts with you all. Let’s jump right into it!
What I Love About This Zero Waste Mascara
The first thing I love about this product is that it is sustainable and truly zero waste. The container is a glass vial with a metal lid, with the option to get a bamboo wand. So awesome that you can reuse the container and/or recycle it when the product is gone! Not only is the mascara in sustainable packaging, it was also shipped in reused cardboard boxes with fully recyclable packing materials.
Hey earth muffins! Looking for an easy way to cut waste in the bathroom? Simple – start using bar soap instead of body wash! I talk a lot about shampoo bars on this blog, but I thought it would be fun to review the latest soap I’ve been trying out. This was kindly sent over to me by CleanO2… And I really love it (but let’s not spoil the rest of this post!). Here are my thoughts on the revolutionary CleanO2 soaps.
What I Love About CleanO2
For starters, this soap is made using an awesome carbon capture process. The founders of the company created the CarbinX, which captures carbon dioxide emissions from building heating systems. The result of this process is non-toxic pearl ash/potassium carbonate… Which is then upcycled into their soaps! I love that a bar of soap can be a part of this circular economy. A huge win for sustainability and the planet.
Hey earth muffins! Being on a plant-based diet can result in low levels of important vitamins and nutrients if you aren’t careful. An easy way to ensure you are getting the nutrition you need is to take some sort of multivitamin. Enter Rootless – this seaweed bite is perfect for anyone looking to balance their nutrients! I was gifted a 30 day supply of these bites, so I wanted to share my Rootless review with you all today.
What I Love About Rootless
Firstly, these bites are made out of seaweed (which is super sustainable!). Seaweed only requires sun and seawater to grow… And it doesn’t require any added water, pesticides, fertilizer, etc. that land plants need. On top of this, seaweed also draws carbon out of the surrounding ocean/air. This is always a good thing in terms of sustainability!
Hey earth muffins! It has been a little bit since I shared a shampoo bar review…. So let’s fix that! 😍 I’ve almost tried every single Lush shampoo at this point, so I figured I would continue my tradition of sharing what I think about the one I’m currently trying out. With the promise of giving you big, beachy hair, is the Seanik bar worth it??
What I Love About Seanik
In terms of sustainability, bars are always better than bottles. I love using shampoo bars because you can avoid all packaging waste. Not having a hideous, brightly-colored plastic bottle in your shower is also a huge win. The bar is made of condensed materials, which means it lasts much longer than liquid shampoo because it hasn’t been diluted by water.
Hey earth muffins! A great way to reduce food waste it to get yourself a compost bin. If you own a house, condo, or apartment with outside space, there is really no reason to not have some sort of bin. When I purchased my house in December, one of the first things I purchased was this compost bin… And I have been using (and loving) it ever since. Today I will be sharing my thoughts on this compost product to convince you all to start using it as well! 😉
What Compost Bin Did I Buy?
After doing a search of all the backyard compost options, I decided on the IM4000 Dual Chamber Tumbling Composter from Amazon (affiliate link). It was the bin with the most reviews (almost 15,000 of them!); so, I figured it had been tried out by many other people. The price point is about $100, with it often being on sale for around $80. Because it isn’t as expensive as other bins, I thought it would be a good place to start since I was new to backyard composting.
Hey earth muffins! Plastic Free July is just around the corner! Every year this challenge comes around, I try to pick an area of my house to focus on in terms of making eco swaps. If you are new to sustainable living, I suggest tackling your kitchen this year! A great way to zero waste your kitchen and reduce single use plastic is to switch to HoldOn bags. These bags are compostable and plastic-free… And they were kind enough to send me some to try out! 🎉 Let’s jump into a full HoldOn review.
Hey earth muffins! A great eco swap for the kitchen is to opt out of plastic wrap and use other methods of keeping your food fresh. One way to do this is to use beeswax wraps – sheets of fabric coated in beeswax that cling to your food, bowls, and containers. I was gifted a set of wraps for Christmas a couple of years ago, so I thought it would be fun to write a review to answer the question “do they really work?”. Let’s jump right into it! 🐝
What I Love About Beeswax Wraps
Obviously it is awesome that this is a sustainable alternative to plastic wrap! Cling wrap is single-use and causes a bunch of waste that ends up in the landfill (or even the ocean). Not great for Mother Earth! Instead of using plastic wrap, I keep my set of beeswax wraps in my mason jar hutch next to all my other reusable containers. Having them accessible makes it easier to remember to use them too!
Unlike the single-use nature of Saran wrap, beeswax wraps last a long time. Once you are done using them, just wash them with soap and water and let air dry. So easy! If you take care of them in terms of cleaning, they will literally last multiple years.
Plus, beeswax wraps work! They keep containers airtight in the fridge which is great for making sure your leftovers don’t go bad. You can also use them instead of plastic Ziploc bags too, as I’ve wrapped sandwiches in them for lunch. Just like with any plastic wrap, make sure you get a full seal to ensure the best result with your food.
Lastly, I love that these are accessible to everyone because you don’t even need to buy these – they are super easy to make yourself! All you need is some fabric scraps and beeswax. There are plenty of DIY tutorials on Pinterest sharing how to melt the wax onto the fabric. Super simple and a great way to knock plastic wrap this summer. 🎉
What I Dislike About Them
When you first open the wrap, don’t be alarmed that it seems pretty inflexible. The beeswax has just hardened and needs to warm up a bit. I find that rubbing your hands over the wrap is a quick and easy way to warm up the wax. Once the wrap is more flexible, it will be easier to seal over containers. This tiny extra step may be annoying to some people, so I thought I would include it as a con.
The only other thing I dislike about beeswax wraps is that they don’t last as long as things like mason jars. Obviously metal and glass is going to outlast anything made from fabric and wax, so I often just find myself opting for containers instead of beeswax wrap. However, you can “mend” your wraps by adding extra layers of beeswax if you want… But I personally just find it easier to not even bother and just pull out a mason jar instead.
Overall, I think beeswax wraps are awesome! While I often just use mason jars instead of wrapping up food, it is nice to have a set of these available to me whenever I need them. 😊 They work just like plastic wrap and come in so many designs and colors too. Have you tried beeswax wraps before? Comment below and let me know your thoughts on this eco swap!
